Weevils Take First Loss of the Season in the Boomtown Classic

EL DORADO, Ark. – The Boll Weevils took their first loss of the 2011 season tonight in the Boomtown Classic against the Ouachita Baptist Tigers, 38-20.

Ouachita (2-0, 2-0 GAC) scored on their first possession and never trailed, though the game remained close throughout. Daniel McGee capped a 12-play opening series with a four-yard rush to put the Tigers up 7-0 early on.

Special teams came up big on OBU’s second drive, as Greg Wilson got a hand on a Jason Fowler field goal attempt that would have put the Tigers up 10-0. The UAM offense responded with an extended march of their own after the touchback on the blocked kick. Hunter Leppert led the Weevils 80 yards down the field and finished the drive himself, with a nine yard run into the OBU end zone to tie the game at seven just minutes into the second quarter.

Fowler connected with a thirty-yarder on the Tigers’ next drive to put OBU back on top 10-7. The ensuing UAM drive started from their own 25 when, on the second play from scrimmage, Damon Wicker exploded for a 41-yard rush to move deep into OBU territory. Unfortunately, the OBU defense stiffened at their 20 yard line forcing the Weevils to settle for a 28 yard field goal from Ryan Crowley to retie the game at 10.

As the game continued to go back-and-forth, Ouachita drove the ball right back at the UAM defense and came away with their second touchdown of the night off a four-yard run from Chris Rycraw. The Weevils would not tie the score again.

The Weevils went into the halftime trailing 17-10. They got a solid return on the opening kickoff and Leppert again marched the offense back into the OBU red zone. A costly false start one first-and-goal from the eight led to a stalled effort on the OBU six that made the Weevils settle for another field goal to pull to 17-13.

From that point the game remained just out of reach until the end. UAM got one final touchdown after a series of nice rushing gains from Nakita Myles and Leppert that was capped by a quick three-yard rush from Greg Taylor, but it came too-little-too late as the OBU offense had already stacked up two touchdowns in the third quarter to open up the 31-20 lead heading into the final quarter.

OBU outpaced the Weevils on the ground and in the air, with 302 yards rushing and 217 passing to 180 and 210 for UAM. Hunter Leppert threw for 161 yards with no touchdowns and two sacks, although he did rush for a net 27 yards with the one touchdown on a keeper in the first quarter. Nakita Myles led the ground game with 80 yards rushing on the night in nine attempts.

The Weevils will take to the road properly this weekend as they travel over to Carrollton, Georgia to take on the West Georgia Wolves next Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 Easter, 6:00 Central. The game will be broadcast live on KHBM and streaming at uamsports.com
