Lumberjacks Outshine Star City Friday Night

Hayden Lassiter prepares to pass the ball as the Jacks take on Star City.
Walking off the field at Star City Friday night, Coach Bo Hembree said, "It was hard," and it was. But the results were positive for the Warren Lumberjacks as they defeated Star City 35-23.  It was a hard-hitting, physical game, and Warren entered the game without defensive standout ArDarrius Harding who sat out due to a concussion suffered against Crossett last week.  During the game, Peyton Hargis had to come out due to injury as did Armani Meza, and running back Dennis Daniels missed the entire third quarter after being shaken up twice.  Through it all the Lumberjacks persevered and made big plays to secure the victory and go 2-0 in conference 8AAAA.

Star City took the opening kick off and was forced to punt.  Warren took over and was also forced to punt.  At the 2:13 mark of the first quarter Star City got on the board with a field goal and took a 3-0 lead.  At the end of the first quarter Dennis Daniels scored from the three and the missed extra point made the score 6-3 Warren.

Star City ran the kickoff back for a touchdown and made the point after to retake the lead 10-6.  The Jacks then scored on a three-yard touchdown pass from Hayden Lassiter to Peyton Hargis on a well designed play, and with the successful PAT Warren went back up 13-10.  With the Warren defense playing very well the Lumberjacks scored on a one-yard run by Hayden Lassiter, and the extra point by Yepes put Warren up 20-10.  With 2:21 left in the first half Lassiter threw a 26-yard pass to Hargis who made a great catch over the defender for a touchdown.  The PAT missed, and Warren lead 26-10.  Warren then intercepted a Star City pass as Greyson Ashcraft made a great play.  Warren could not score as the half ended.
Marquis Moore proved tough for the Bulldogs to handle all night.

Both teams threatened in the third but only the Lumberjacks scored on a safety resulting in a 28-10 Lumberjack lead.  Warren got inside the Star City 10-yard line but could not punch the ball across the goal line with both Hargis and Daniels on the sideline.

With 11:56 in the fourth quarter Star City scored from the one-yard line on fourth down and went for two points.  The PAT failed, and the score was 28-16 Warren.  Later the Bulldogs scored on a four- yard run, and with the successful kick, the score was cut to 28-23.  Then Star City recovered an on- side kick and had a chance to take the lead with just minutes left in the game.  The Lumberjack defense rose to the occasion and stopped Star City on downs.  With less than a minute to go on third down and nine, Dennis Daniels, who had reentered the game, broke for a 44-yard touchdown to seal the win.  CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE PLAY.  With the extra point by Yepes, Warren lead 35-23.  Star City got the ball back with seconds left and Warren forced a fumble.  The Lumberjacks then ran out the clock to complete the victory.

Daniels enjoyed yet another incredible game, and both Deangelo McCoy and D'shawn Jackson provide solid running during the time Daniels was out.  Franklin Gilmore also provided help in running the ball and played very well on offense and defense.  Hayden Lassiter ran hard when called upon and made several very good throws.  He also did a good job on defense.  Warren's young offensive and defensive lines battled hard all night and made plays and opened holes.  A number of good plays were turned in by Warren's secondary.
Warren powered through the Bulldog defense.

The Lumberjacks now travel to Dumas to compete against an always capable Bobcat team.  A big Warren crowd should be on hand to support the Lumberjacks in their quest for another win.  A large and vocal group of Lumberjack fans were present in Star City and it was helpful in the very hard fought game.
