UAM Softball Splits With Delta State

CLEVELAND, Mississippi - The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team split a pair of non-conference road games against Delta State on Tuesday.

The Blossoms (15-7) lost the first game 8-4, but bounced back with an 8-3 victory in the second game. The win in the second game for UAM snapped an 11-game winning streak for the Lady Statesmen (21-5).

Six of UAM's eight runs in the second game came on homeruns. Junior McKenzie Rice hit a two-run shot to right center in the top of the third inning to open the scoring.

UAM scored six in the fourth, highlighted by a grand slam to right center by senior Holly Wilmarth, her team-leading seventh homerun of the year.

The Lady Statesmen scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the third in three consecutive run-producing at bats that included a double, a single and a sac fly.

Senior Elizabeth Delafield (6-2) earned the win in complete-game fashion, giving up three runs off 10 hits with one strikeout and no walks.

In the opener, DSU took advantage of a pair of UAM errors and a walk to score two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead.

UAM got on the board in the fourth on a two-out, RBI single from Rice to score sophomore Ashton Currey, who doubled to lead off the inning.

DSU had two solo homeruns in the fifth and took advantage of another UAM error in the sixth two score three more.

The Blossoms cut the final deficit in half by batting through the lineup and scoring three in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a two-run double from freshman Kali Bolter. Senior Kali Piha doubled in the previous at bat. Sophomore Kelbe Callaway finalized the scoring with an RBI single later in the inning.

Rice and Bolter each had three hits in the win. UAM totaled 14 hits as a team, out-hitting DSU by five.

The Blossoms are back in action this weekend on the road in a four-game Great American Conference series against Southwestern Oklahoma State. More information about that series will be released later in the week.
