WEEVILSBASEBALL FACES MISSOURI WESTERN IN REGIONAL OPENER

ST. CLOUD, Minnesota — The 24th-ranked University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team hopes to carry over momentum from its unbeaten start to the 2016 postseason this week at the NCAA Division II Central Regional Tournament, hosted by St. Cloud State University.

The Weevils (36-14) open up against Missouri Western State on Thursday, May 19. First pitch is 1:30 p.m. All of UAM’s postseason games can be heard on the UAM Sports Network at KHBM-FM 93.7 in Monticello and online at UAMsports.com. More information can be found at the tournament home page: http://scsuhuskies.com/sports/2016/5/16/2016-ncaa-central-regional-baseball-tournament.aspx?path=baseball.

UAM is the No. 4 seed in the tournament, facing off against the fifth-seed Griffons, an at large selection out of the Mid America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. MWSU (38-18) lost to Central Missouri, the No. 2 seed in the regional, in the MIAA championship game by a final score of 16-14.

The Weevils are 5-0 this season in postseason play following a commanding run through the Great American Conference Championship Tournament. UAM outscored its opponents 52-16 throughout five games, led by 19 runs batted in and four home runs from GAC Player of the Year Corey Wood and a .650 batting average from senior All-GAC first team shortstop Evan Comeau.

The regional tournament features an eight-team double-elimination bracket. A win over MWSU advances UAM to Friday’s 5 p.m. match up against the winner of the No. 1 St. Cloud State/No. 8 Minnesota State opening round game. A loss pits the Weevils against the loser of that game on Friday at 10 a.m.

This is UAM’s second appearance in the NCAA tournament. The first was a 0-2 outcome in the 2014 central regional hosted by Arkansas Tech University in Russellville. For Missouri Western, the Griffons have earned the program’s third appearance in the NCAA tournament.
