MONTICELLO — University of Arkansas at Monticello men’s basketball coach Kyle Tolin has announced 11 signings for the 2016 recruiting class.
“We are excited about adding several new players to our roster,” said Tolin, who is entering his third season as head coach. “Our goal is always to get better during the recruiting process, and Coach (Justin) Newton and myself have worked extremely hard to find the right fit for our program. We have done extra research and emphasized the need for high-character guys that want to be at UAM… I really appreciate Justin’s hard work. He has come in and immediately made our program better in the short time we’ve had him.”
David Beasley 6-1 | Guard | Muskogee, Oklahoma | Independence Community College
At Muskogee High School: All-Tulsa Metro Area, First Team Three Rivers All-Vype, three-year starter, averaged 17 points per game, led team to state tournament as a senior… Last year at Independence Community College, averaged 11 points per game, shot 36.5 percent on three-pointers, 70 percent on free throws, averaged 2.1 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game.
“We have followed Davis since he was in high school,” said Tolin. “He played in one if the elite junior college conferences in the country. One of the things we liked most about him was his toughness. He is a versatile guard who can play on the point and off the ball. He is a good shooter and is strong attacking the basket.”
Hunter Daley 5-11 | Guard | Jessieville, Arkansas | Jessieville High School
Three-year starter for Jessieville High School, averaged 21 points per game as a junior and 22.4 points per game as a senior… Combined in the last two years of his prep career, he shot 54 percent from the field and 37 percent from three-point range… Posted a career-high of 41 points against Mayflower, when he made 15 of 18 shots… Scored 38 points against Perryville (16 for 20)… Scored at least 20 points in 17 games during his senior season… Back-to-back Sentinel Record Player of the Year, First Team All-Conference, First Team All-State, All-Star game selection, 2016 All-Star East MVP… Arkansas Basketball Coaches Association Top 5 selection for Class 3A… Led JHS to district championship and a 22-8 record.
“Hunter can really shoot the ball from deep and plays with a lot of grit,” said Tolin. “He is a local product who we were fortunate to get, and we are excited to watch his career unfold here at UAM. He is a great athlete and has a will to win.”
Stephen Glassco 6-5 | Forward | Lakeworth, Florida | West Hill Community College
Prepped at Park Vista High School in Lakeworth, Florida… Last season at West Hills CC, he averaged 9.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game, while shooting 46.3 percent from the field and 35 percent from three-point range. Totaled 55 assists throughout the year, led the team in charges take, and had 14 games with at least 10 points. Honorable Mention All-Conference for the Central Valley Conference and was also named the league’s co-defensive MVP.
“Stephen is a very smart young man and comes from a great program in West Hills Community College,” Tolin commented. “He has been well-coached under Mark Arce and understands the right way to play the game. He is a skilled post player and also has the ability to shoot the ball well. We are glad to have someone as versatile as Stephen on our team.”
Cobe Goosby 6-5 | Guard | Elba, Alabama | Gulf Coast State College
At Elba High School, led team to a 26-2 record and the 2A state championship as a senior... Was named the state tournament most valuable player and 2A player of the year… At Gulf Coast State College, was a two-year starter and held the team to a 19-10 record as a freshman and an 18-12 record as a sophomore… At GCSC, averaged 12 points per game, shot 45 percent from the field, averaged 5.2 rebounds per game, and 3.5 assists per game… Scored at least 10 points in 17 games last season.
“Cobe is a stat stuff who can play multiple positions,” said Tolin. “He played in one of the top JUCO leagues and has produced at high levels. We look for him to do the same at UAM. One of his opposing coaches said hew as one of the toughest players in the panhandle conference.”
Stephon Gordon 6-3 | Guard | Wellington, Florida | West Hills Community College
At Wellington High School in Florida, Gordon averaged 14 points and 7.1 rebounds per game, while shooting 57 percent from the field during his senior season, which led to a first-team all-conference honor… At West Hills CC, he averaged 12.6 points per game and shot 35.4 percent from three-point range as a sophomore with 20 games of at least 10 points… Averaged 5.6 rebounds per game throughout the year and had a career high 11 boards in two different games… Totaled 88 assists to only 57 turnovers last year… Was selected to the All-Central Valley Conference First Team.
“Stephon is a very athletic guard, is very good at getting to the rim, and is very good in transition,” said Tolin. “His length and athleticism gives us great depth at the guard position.”
Derylton Hill 6-5 | Forward | Palm Bay, Florida | Wallace State Community College
At Palm Bay High School, averaged 23 points and seven rebounds per game as a senior… Played at Potomac State College as a freshman, where he averaged 15 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, and shot 54 percent from the field. Helped PSC to a 21-10 record and a berth into the NJCAA national tournament, where he named to the all-tournament team as a freshman. Turned in 23 games with at least 10 points… Last year at Wallace State-Hanceville (Alabama), he averaged 11.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, while shooting 58 percent from the field. Posted 21 games with at least 10 points and eight games with at least 10 rebounds. He helped lead WSCC to a 26-6 record, a top 20 national ranking and a conference championship. He was selected to the Alabama Community College All-Conference Team.
“Derylton provides us with an inside scoring presence that we needed,” said Tolin. “He has a knack for scoring, can score in a variety of ways, and creates mismatch problems for opponents. We are very fortunate to add him to our program and are looking forward to a great career from him here at UAM.”
Tyrin Jones 6-3 | Guard | Duckhill, Mississippi | Northwest Mississippi Junior College
At Grenada High School in Mississippi, helped lead his team to a 6A state runner-up finish and three consecutive district championships. As a high school senior, averaged 16.7 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.7 steals per game and earned all-district and honorable mention all-state accolades. Last year with Northwest Mississippi JC, he averaged 14.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game while shooting 50 percent from the field… Posted three games with at least 30 points.
“Tyrin is one of the toughest and most competitive guys that we saw play during the process,” said Tolin. “He is a vocal leader and played on a very good team. He’s a great defender and kept getting better as the season went along. We are expecting great things out of Tyrin this upcoming season.”
Tayte Kitts 6-7 | Forward | Corryton, Tennessee | Roane State Community College
Prepped at Union County High School in Tennessee… At Roane State, started as a sophomore and averaged seven points and five rebounds per game, while shooting 51 percent from the field. He was the team leader in charges taken and offensive rebounds. Posted eight games with at least 10 points and seven games with at least seven rebounds.
“Tayte is very athletic and is a ferocious competitor,” said Tolin. “He battles every play and is a high-level defender that can guard true bigs. One of the things that stood out to us most was his competitiveness and his coachability. He is what UAM needs. He will be reliable, roll up his sleeves and work hard everyday.”
Karim Mawuenyega 6-0 | Point Guard | New Orleans, Louisiana | South Georgia State College
At Alexander High School in Douglasville, Georgia, he was named the Region A Player of the Year, Douglas County Player of the Year, Second Team All-State and was named to the All-Atlanta Metro Honorable Mention team. Led his high school teal to a 23-8 record during his senior season, when he averaged 17 points, 3.1 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 3.3 steals per game. Posted 25 games during his senior season with at least 10 points… Played one year at South Carolina Upstate before transferring to South Georgia State. Last season, he averaged 8.6 point, three assists, 2.6 rebounds and two steals a game as the starting point guard. Totaled 86 assists and shot 42 percent from the field.
“Karim has won at every level he has played, and we are looking for him to bring that winning culture to UAM,” said Tolin. “His ability to shoot the ball well, his high basketball IQ, and his tenacity on the defensive side of the ball will make an immediate impact at the point guard position.”
Alex Morris 6-1 | Guard | Dothan, Alabama | Genesee Community College
Prepped at Ashford Academy in Alabama… As a freshman at Genesee CC, Morris averaged 8.1 points per game, and improved to 15.1 points per game last season while shooting 41 percent from three-point range. He was his team’s leading scorer, and also added an average of 5.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. Ranked second in the NJCAA Division II in free throw percentage at 87.8 (122-for-139). Totaled 86 assists and helped lead his team to a No. 14 national ranking. Posted 21 games with at least 10 points. Earned First Team All-Region honors.
“Alex can really shoot the ball,” said Tolin. “His percentages in both high school and junior college were very impressive. He can score at will, and has a great feel for the game. He will add depth to our guard spot.”
Chave Zackery 5-10 | Point Guard | Morrilton, Arkansas | Morrilton High School
As a junior at Morrilton HS, Zackery averaged 10 points, four rebounds and three assists per game and helped lead the team to a berth into the state tournament. As a senior, he averaged 15 points, three assists, and three rebounds per game while shooting 50 percent from the field and 32 percent on three-pointers. Posted 25 games with at least 10 points… Was selected to participate in the Arkansas All-Star Game, and was selected as one of the top 35 players to the All-501 team. Also played for the Arkansas Wings AAU team.
“Chave is a tough coach’s kid who knows what it’s like to play with and against quality competition,” said Tolin. “He has a great understanding of how to play the game the right way. We are also excited to get another Arkansas All-State signee to play for UAM.”
