Homecoming Celebration Set For October 20-22

           MONTICELLO, AR — An inaugural dinner for Chancellor Karla Hughes, presentation of the 2016 Alumni Awards for Achievement and Merit, and the annual Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet highlight the University of Arkansas at Monticello’s homecoming celebration October 20-22.
            UAM will present the 2016 Alumni Awards for Achievement and Merit to three alumni as part of the inaugural dinner for Chancellor Hughes on Friday, October 21 a 6 p.m. in the John F. Gibson University Center. This year’s honorees are Brigadier General (ret.) Roger McClelland, Canadian Football League star Clarence Denmark, and successful retail grocer David Leech of Stuttgart. The university will also present the Continuing the Connection Award to Louine Leech, a graduate of the Arkansas A&M Class of 1938. Tickets to the inaugural dinner are $50 with $25 earmarked for scholarships. Tickets must be purchased no later than October 12 by contacting Christy Pace at pacec@uamont.edu or (870) 460-1020.

            The Sports Hall of Fame banquet will be held October 20 at 6 p.m. in the University Center. This year’s inductees are former football stars Mac Newcomb and Paul Russell, softball standout Meredith Heckel-LaRue, basketball star Solon Mobley and baseball pitcher Joe Daw. Larry Smith, long-time sports information director at UAM and Arkansas Tech will receive the UAM Spirit Award. Tickets to the banquet are $35 and may be purchased by calling the UAM athletics office at (870) 460-1058.
            Following the Hall of Fame banquet, the university will host student bed races and a pep rally at Convoy Leslie-Cotton Boll Stadium.
            Activities scheduled for Saturday, October 22 include a reunion breakfast for the A&M/UAM African-American Alumni Society at 8:30 a.m. in the Capitol Room of the University Center. Tickets are $20 per person and may be purchased by contacting Classie Jones-Green at (870) 556-0527 or Shay Gillespie at (870) 723-3582.
            The Gamma Zeta chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority will host a reunion breakfast in the Gallery Room of the University Center beginning at 10 a.m. There will be a silent auction to raise money for Special Olympics with a tailgate party to follow at 12 noon at Weevil Pond.
            Tailgate parties are scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Commercial Bank Employees Tailgate Row adjacent to Weevil Pond. The Weevil Walk of Champions, featuring the football team, cheerleaders and marching band, will be held at 12:30 p.m.
            Pre-game ceremonies, including the introduction of the 2016 homecoming court and coronation of the homecoming queen, will begin at 2:30 p.m. at Convoy Leslie-Cotton Boll Stadium with the kickoff between UAM and Ouachita Baptist scheduled for 3 p.m.
