The Warren Lumberjacks traveled to Crosset Friday, September 23, to face the Crossett Eagles in the opening conference game of the 2016 season.  Warren was a heavy favorite to win but injuries and an inspired Crossett team made the game a battle.  Warren trailed at halftime 21-17 but rose to the occasion and won 44-27.

The Jacks took the opening kickoff and marched down the field scoring on a two-yard run by quarterback Hayden Lassiter.  Sergio Yepes made the PAT, and Warren lead 7-0.  However, Crossett returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, and after missing the point after, Warren still lead 7-6.

On the first play after the kickoff, Lassiter hit Treylon Burks across the middle for a big gainer only to have the ball fumbled back to Crossett.  With 4:09 in the first quarter, Crossett scored on a 33-yard run on 4th down.  With a successful 2-point conversion, Crossett took a 14-7 lead.  With 1:17 left in the quarter Lassiter scored on an 11-yard run, and Yepes made the score 14-14.

In the second quarter, Crossett had an 85-yard touchdown run on third down and made the PAT to go ahead 21-14.  With one second left in the half, Yepes kicked a field goal for the Lumberjacks to cut the margin to 21-17.

In the third quarter after a great defensive stand by the Lumberjacks, Lassiter again ran in a TD from 15 yards, and Yepes was successful on the point after.  Warren took a 24-21 advantage. With 1:49 remaining in the quarter, Lassiter scored his third TD of the night from three yards out, and after a blocked extra point, Warren lead 30-21.

In the fourth, Warren recovered a fumble at the Jack 37-yard line.  Later at the 6:54 mark, Dennis Daniels scored from the one yard line, and with Yepes's successful PAT, Warren was ahead 37-21.
Crossett then hit a 34 yard touchdown pass after two Warren defenders missed the ball and after a failed two point conversion attempt, Warren still lead 37-27.  The Lumberjacks finished it off with a beautiful 30-yard run by Byron Person, and with the point after by Yepes, the final score was Warren 44 Crossett 27.

The Lumberjack defense played much better in the second half, and the offense was consistent all night but was harmed by turnovers.  Dennis Daniels, appeared less than full speed, had a strong second half and ran 18 times for 236 yards and two touchdowns.  Hayden Lassiter was vital to the Warren offense running 25 times for 160 yards and three TD's.  Byron Person came in several times and spelled Daniels at running back and had 4 rushes for 82 yards and one touchdown.  Person also played very well on defense.  Lassiter was 9 of 22 for 127 yards throwing.  Lassiter helped on defense in the second half on several series.

While the offensive line had some struggles with its modified lineup, the holes opened up and gave Warren's backs room to run.  The defense got stronger as the game wore on.

The Lumberjacks are now 4-0 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.  The next game is at Jim Hurley, Jr. Stadium Friday, September 30, with kickoff at 7:00 P.M.
