Sprinkle Recognized as 2016 Garrett Uekman Memorial Scholarship Recipient

Sprinkle Recognized as Garrett Uekman Foundation Scholarship Recipient

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas senior tight end Jeremy Sprinkle has been recognized as the 2016 Garrett Uekman Memorial Endowed Scholarship recipient, the Garrett Uekman Foundation and Razorback Athletics announced Wednesday. The Garrett Uekman Memorial Endowed Athletic Scholarship honors the memory of former Razorback football student-athlete Garrett Uekman.

All Razorback student-athletes are eligible for the award with preference given to football student-athletes, tight ends and current or former walk-ons.

“Every football season, we relive the excitement and joy of seeing Garrett run out of the “A” on the field,” Danny and Michelle Uekman, Garrett’s parents said. “It’s bittersweet now, but it warms our heart to see a fellow teammate, in a sense, run in his place. We could not be more proud that Jeremy Sprinkle is this year’s scholarship recipient. We’ll be cheering him on for sure!”

Sprinkle, a John Mackey Award candidate, led all Southeastern Conference (SEC) tight ends with six receiving touchdowns in 2015, good for a tie for ninth among Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) tight ends. The White Hall, Arkansas native has picked up right where he left off, scoring a touchdown in each of Arkansas’ wins over Louisiana Tech and No. 15 TCU. Sprinkle is one of three tight ends in the nation to catch a touchdown pass in each of the first two weeks of the season.

Sprinkle also earned his undergraduate degree in recreation and sport management in May 2016.

Uekman unexpectedly passed away in November 2011. At the time of his death, Uekman was a 19-year-old sophomore majoring in applied exercise science. He was a redshirt freshman tight end on the Razorback football team and played in nine games during the 2011 season.

The Garrett Uekman Foundation was founded to help fund heart disease research and education and fund scholarships to deserving student-athletes.

The Garrett Uekman Scholarship is included in, not in addition to, the 85 scholarships allowed by the NCAA.
