Weevils Defeat SWOS, 35-28

MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello football team defeated Great American Conference opponent Southwestern Oklahoma State in a game where the Weevils were not just battling the Bulldogs, but the weather as well.

Final score in this match-up was 35-28 in favor of the Weevils.

UAM (1-1) and SWOSU (0-2) each endured multiple lightning delays throughout this contest which saw the game stretched out, along with kick-off being delayed 15 minutes due to the weather. Despite a wet playing surface, the Weevils were able to emerge victorious in the 2016 home opener at Willis "Convoy" Leslie Cotton Boll Stadium.

Arkansas-Monticello trailed Southwestern Oklahoma State through the first quarter. A quick score to open the second quarter as Cole Sears found the end-zone on the ground pulled the home team within one point at 7-6. UAM had an answer for every SWOSU score in the second quarter as Sears hit Jalen Tolliver in the end-zone for the 14-yard pitch and catch, with a converted two point try after, evened the game up at 14-14 at the 3:02 mark. UAM capped off the opening half with a 34-yard punt return touchdown by Kevin Fitzpatrick which gave the Weevils the 21-14 advantage.

The second half saw SWOSU and Arkansas-Monticello trading scores once again with Sears connecting with Tolliver yet again and Sears finding the end-zone one more time on the ground early in the fourth quarter giving the Weevils a 33-21 lead with 14:24 left in the match-up. The defense of UAM came up big late in the fourth, getting pressure on the Bulldog quarterback and eventually causing a safety resulting in two points for the Weevils. A final defensive stop for Arkansas-Monticello with under a minute remaining in the game sealed the victory for the home team at 35-28.

Leading the Weevil offense was wide receiver Jalen Tolliver who finished the game with 11 total catches for 134 yards and two touchdowns.
