Lumberjacks Win Big 8 4A Contest

Quarterback Hayden Lassiter could see the writing on the wall as Dennis Daniels heads across the goal line for a Lumberjack touchdown.
The Warren Lumberjacks entered Friday night's conference game against Dumas 5-0 on the season and 3-0 in conference.  They faced a very good Bobcat team that was also undefeated in conference play and ranked 13 in class 4A.  Dumas was playing good football and definitely looking like a contender.  Everyone expected a tough game, and Dumas certainly felt like they could compete.  On top of everything else, it was homecoming at Warren which sometimes takes the focus away of the home team.  Not so in 2016.
Warren's defense held strong all night.

Dumas won the toss and deferred, so the Lumberjack chose to receive.  Dumas executed a perfect onside kick and got the ball.  Warren fans thought, here we go.  The Lumberjack defense had other

ideas.  The Jack defense held and forced a punt.  Warren took over at it's own 13 and promptly drove the field.  With 7:36 remaining in the first quarter, Dennis Daniels scored from the one. Sergio Yepes made the PAT, and Warren led 7-0.

The Lumberjacks missed a couple of opportunities to score, and Dumas got moving offensively in the second quarter and drove inside the Lumberjack 10.  The defense held, and Hayden Lassiter hit Treylon Burks for 64 yards and a
touchdown.  The point after by Yepes was good and Warren was up 14-0.  After a good run by Dumas and a penalty against Warren, Dumas scored on a five-yard run and made the PAT to cut the score to 14-7 with 27.4 seconds left in the half.  Warren got a good kick return and after a couple of good plays.  Sergio Yepes made a 36-yard field goal as time expired to make the halftime score 17-7 in Warren's favor. After enjoying homecoming activities during the intermission, the Lumberjacks kicked off and stopped Dumas, forcing a punt and taking over on its own 20.  At the 4:18 mark, Daniels ran it in from 18 yards out, and Yepes made the score 24-7.  With 2:36 left, Hayden Lassiter intercepted a Dumas pass ,and moments later Daniels scored again from the two.  The PAT missed and Warren led 30-7.

In the fourth quarter, Lassiter hit Burks with a 53-yard TD pass,  and Yepes was good on the extra point to up the Warren lead 37-7.  Dumas later scored on a six-yard run after Warren went for it on fourth and four with the second team offense in the game.  That made the score 37-14.  With 3:33 left, Byron Person ran in a TD from the five-yard line, and Yepes again converted to make the score 44-14.  Dumas then had an 80-yard run against some of the Lumberjack second defense, but missed the extra point making the final 44-20.  The Lumberjacks played very well in all phases of the game.

Byron Person runs in TD from the 3-yard line.
Dennis Daniels again came up big for Warren with 15 carries for 189 yards and three touchdowns. Hayden Lassiter ran nine times for 61 yards.  Lassiter was 7 for 11 passing for 185 yards and two touchdowns.  Treylon Burks caught three passed for 150 yards and two touchdowns.  The defense flew to the ball and had numerous hard hits.
Dennis Daniels races toward the goal lne.
The Lumberjacks travel to DeWitt next week to face another 84A opponent.  Every team plays very hard against Warren.  Next week's game begins at 7:00 P.M.

Hanging on to that ball, Jacks score again!

Lumberjack defense crushes Dumas's hopes of a victory.

Though it was homecoming, the Lumberjacks were poised and ready to take care of business...victory in sight.

Greyson Ashcraft and another Lumberjack defender proved to be a force to be reckoned with for the Bobcats.

The Jacks played hard all night long.

The Homecoming game was played before a packed house.

Quarterback Hayden Lassiter lets it fly!

What a catch.
