UAM Baseball Too Much for Muleriders

MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team defeated Southern Arkansas University in a non-conference match-up Friday afternoon at home by a final score of 10-5.

The Weevils (2-2) jumped out to a hot start against the Muleriders of SAU (3-3) with a four run first inning to begin the game as Brady Weiss, Andres Rios, and Alex Smith each recorded RBI singles to open the contest.

SAU slowly chipped away at the UAM lead scoring two runs in the third and fourth inning, and eventually took the lead in the top of the fifth at 5-4. Arkansas-Monticello reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth however after a Rios single to right field.

UAM powered ahead in the eighth inning, scoring four total runs and closed the game at 10-5 over the Muleriders. Leading the offensive attack for the Weevils in this game was Andres Rios who went 3-for-5 and recorded three RBIs. Nick Piraino also tallied a three-hit day for himself and scored two runs.

Landon McFadden (1-0) was credited with the win in the match-up, throwing 2.0 innings, and Jared Libke secured his first save of the season throwing 3.0 innings, totaling five strikeouts as well.

Arkansas-Monticello will take the field next tomorrow, Saturday, February 11 as the Weevils and Ichabods will now play a double-header on Saturday, February 11, featuring two nine-inning games beginning at 11 a.m. at Weevils Field. The action for Sunday has been canceled. Saturday's scheduled ring ceremony has also been changed. Instead of prior to the first game, the celebration honoring the 2016 record-breaking Weevils will now be held in-between games, approximately 1:45 PM.
