UAM Hoops Notched a Road Victory

SHAWNEE, Oklahoma - The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team notched a road victory over Great American Conference opponent Oklahoma Baptist by a final score of 79-69.

The victory tonight for the Weevils secured itself at least a guaranteed share of the GAC regular season title with UAM now in sole possession of first place after a loss on the night by Arkansas Tech with one season game remaining for each.

UAM (21-4, 17-4 GAC) despite trailing the Bison of Oklahoma Baptist (7-18, 4-17 GAC) at the half, 36-35, staged a comeback in the following half in the match-up. Arkansas-Monticello built multiple small runs early on in the second half and was able to hold a double-digit lead over the Bison for the most of the remainder of regulation until the final buzzer with UAM securing the win at 79-69.

Arkansas-Monticello was led on offense by junior Derylton Hill with 20 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the floor. Hill added five rebounds and one assist in the victory as well.

Several other Weevils finished the night in double figures which included Tyrin Jones with 17 points, Karim Mawuenyega and Vicktor Arnick at 14 total, and Cobe Goosby provided 10 points. Arnick also went on to lead UAM in overall rebounding by pulling down a team-high seven boards.

Final team statistics in the contest for the UAM included 47 percent shooting from the field (27-for-57), 28 percent beyond the arc (5-for-18), and 87 percent on free throws (20-for-23). The Bison finished the night shooting 50 percent (28-for-56) overall, 41 percent on three's (7-for-17), and 60 percent from the free throw line (6-for-10).

The Weevils will be back in action next on Saturday, February 25 as UAM travels to Bethany, Oklahoma to take on Southern Nazarene in the final regular season match-up of the 2016-17 season with tip-off scheduled for 3 p.m.
