UAM Softball Splits on Opening Day

BENTONVILLE, Arkansas — The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team split its 2017 opening day in the DII Challenge with a win over Missouri Western, and a loss against Northwest Missouri State.

In the opening game for the Blossoms, UAM shot out of the gate with a 10-0 lead over Missouri Western (4-1) after the first inning.

The Arkansas-Monticello (1-1) offense continued to find ways to get runs across the plate, as the final score in this match-up ended at 17-4 after five innings.


Leading the offensive attack in this contest was junior Ashton Currey who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored. Freshman Jordan Herbner also provided a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 as well with three RBIs, three runs scored, and one triple. Senior McKenzie Rice knocked in three RBIs and provided the first home-run of the 2017 season as well in her first plate appearance of the year.

In the second match-up of the day against Northwest Missouri State (1-1), UAM found itself behind five runs after the first inning.

The Blossoms got onto the board in the bottom of the fourth inning after a Kaylee Freeman single to center field brought in Maranda Clendenin to put the score at 6-1.

UAM's final run came in the bottom of the seventh inning after a throwing error saw Kali Bolter cross the plate, but Blossoms ultimately fell to the Bearcats, 9-2.

The Blossoms will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, February 11, in the final day of the DII Challenge as UAM will take on Pittsburg State at 10 a.m. and finish up with Missouri-St. Louis at 1 p.m. in Bentonville, Arkansas.
