Lumberjacks Take Down Stuttgart/Watch Full Game On-Demand

In a hard fought game that experienced numerous penalties and turnovers by both teams, the Warren Lumberjacks put together enough offense and a tough second half defense to put the Stuttgart Ricebirds away 27-13 before a big crowd at Jim Hurley, Jr. Stadium Friday evening, September 9th.  The Lumberjacks again seemed to be out of rhythm on offense at times.  After receiving the opening kickoff Lumberjack quarterback J'malachi Kinnard appeared to get hurt in some way.  He sat out the rest of the first half but came back and played to help Warren win in the second half.

It was an unusual game for the Lumberjacks on offense after Kinnard was hurt.  Treylon Burks played quarterback most of the game running out of a shotgun power formation.  He became a runner from a no back formation and gained 84 yards and scored all four touchdowns for the
Jacks.  Tenth grader Logan Mann ran a number of plays at quarterback when Warren went back to its basic spread offense.  Mann was not asked to pass but seemed to do a good job managing the offense.  It may be the first time in many years that three different players experienced time as quarterback in a single game for Warren.  Vincent Stepps again ran well.

The Lumberjack defense, while struggling at times trying to stop the pass seemed to get better as the game went forward.  Warren gave up zero points in the second half.  The defensive line was dominant against the run and the linebackers seemed to improve.  Psavian Person played well. Warren put pressure on the Stuttgart quarterback all night.

The Warren kicking game was solid with Jesus Tinoco kicking off well most of the night and hitting three of four extra points.  The one missed did not appear to be his fault.  Burks punted well all evening.

Warren took the opening kickoff and moved the ball before Stuttgart intercepted an overthrown pass at the 10:29 mark.  After punts were exchanged, Warren's Psavian Person intercepted a Stuttgart pass deep in Stuttgart territory.  Treylon Burks ran in for a touchdown from 15 yards and Tinoco converted to put Warren up 7-0.  With only 14 seconds left in the first quarter, Stuttgart scored on a two yard run and made the point after to tie the game.

Burks scored again for Warren with 6:33 left in the second quarter on a three yard run and again Tinoco hit the PAT.  Warren led 14-7.  The Lumberjack's Braden Curry had a big interception in the end zone to stop a Stuttgart drive.  Shortly thereafter Burks threw a beautiful deep pass to Keemontrae McKnight to set Warren up inside the Stuttgart five yard line.  Burks then scored form the one and Tinoco converted to put Warren up 21-7.  With little time remaining in the half after a Warren pass interference call, Stuttgart score on a one yard run but missed the point after.  The Jacks led at the half, 21-13.

Neither team scored in the third quarter but Kinnard came back to play quarterback for Warren.
The teams continued to exchange punts.  With 9:15 left in the game and Stuttgart driving in Warren territory, Stuttgart fumbled and Keemontrae McKnight recovered for the Lumberjacks. Warren drove the field, mostly on the power running of Burks and he scored on a ten yard run with 4;42 left in the game.  The PAT was no good making the score 27-13.  On the final drive, Kinnard came back in at quarterback and hit Burks with a big third and long pass for a first down.  Stuttgart turned the ball over on downs with 1:50 remaining in the game and the Lumberjacks ran out the clock to win 27-13.

The Lumberjacks will travel to Watson Chapel September 15th to play a final non-conference game before beginning 84A competition.  Chapel is a very good 5A team.

The Warren offensive line welcomed back Davis Pennington from injury for the Stuttgart game and he seemed to handle it well.  The offensive line had some very good plays during the game, but needs to improve its consistency.  Lineman Will Woodard sat out the entire game due to an injury.  Hopefully he will be back soon.

Make plans to have a big crowd at Watson Chapel Friday night and support the Lumberjacks!
