Round one of the 2017 state football playoffs got underway Friday night November 10th.  The Warren Lumberjacks, the number one seed in conference 84A, faced off against the Highland Rebels, the number 5 seed of conference 34A.  Warren jumped ahead quickly and the game was decided by the second quarter.

The Rebels won the toss and elected to take the ball.  Warren held them on a three and out and got the punt at the Lumberjack 49 yard line.  Just moments later, quarterback J'malachi Kinnard hit Treylon Burks for 41-yards and a touchdown.  Jesus Tinoco made the extra point and Warren was up 7-0.  Highland returned the kickoff to their own 25-yard line where Psavian Person made a monster hit on the runner.  The Jack defense again held on three downs and forced a punt.  Treylon Burks promptly returned the punt 55-yards for a touchdown and Tinoco made the PAT, putting Warren ahead 14-0.  The following kickoff was into the end zone and Highland took over at their twenty.  Warren's Caleb Watson intercepted a pass and ran it back for a touchdown but the TD was called back for a questionable penalty.  The Lumberjacks tried to go deep a couple of times and then punted to Highlands 22-yard line.  With 4:42 left in the first quarter, Treylon Burks intercepted a pass and raced twenty yards for a touchdown.  Tinoco was successful with the point after and Warren was ahead 21-0.

After another Tinoco kick off into the end zone, Warren forced a punt and got the ball back at the Rebels forty four.  With 2:11 remaining in the quarter, Vincent Stepps ran 44-yards for a score and the PAT was good by Tinoco.  Warren now lead 28-0.  The kick off went into the end zone and Highland got the ball at their twenty and were forced to punt again.  Warren took over at the Highland 38-yard line as the first quarter ended.

With 11:28 on the clock in the second quarter, Kinnard threw and 18-yard TD pass to Keemontrae McKnight and Tinoco made the point after.  Warren now was ahead 35-0.  Warren's Damarcus Gilbert made a big hit on the ensuing kick off and the Rebels took over.  They shortly were forced to punt and Warren got the ball at the Rebels'48-yard line.  After a short drive, Warren's Luke Gorman scored from five yards out and with the PAT successful by Tinoco, Warren now was up 42-0.

The kick off was into the end zone and the Lumberjack defense forced yet another punt.  The Jacks got the ball back at their own thirty two after a very good punt by Highland.  With the Lumberjack second team offense in the game, the Jacks fumbled at their own twenty three.  Highland recovered and scored on a 13-yard run against Warren's second defense.  They made a two point conversion and the score stood at 42-8.

The Lumberjacks got the ball back and quickly scored on a 35-yard pass form Kinnard to Burks.  The PAT attempt by Warren's back up kicker was blocked, leaving the score 48-8.  After another kick off by Tinoco into the end zone, Kade Weaver recovered a fumble for the Jacks.  The half ended with the score Warren 48, Highland 8.

The Lumberjacks received the second half kick off and with the clock running for the sportsmanship rule and Warren's second teams in the game, the teams settled down to exchanging punts.  During the third quarter, Warren's Ja'Marcus Hampton recovered a Rebel fumble at the Lumberjack 12-yard line.  With 10:30 left in the fourth quarter, Highland scored on a ten yard run and missed the two point conversion.  The game ended 48-14 in favor of the Lumberjacks.
More defense...

The Lumberjacks will now face Ozark in round two of the playoffs.  The game is set for 7:00 P.M. Friday, November 17th at Jim Hurley, Jr. Stadium in Warren.  Ozark is the second seed out of class 44A.  They will be a good team.  A big crowd is expected and the Lumberjacks encourage all their fans to be present and be supportive.

It appeared the Jacks came out of the Highland game minus any major injuries.  They will have to stay focused and play well the coming weeks if they are to contend for another state championship.  SRC urges the fans to attend the games and stay behind this team.  They are truly outstanding and a credit to the Warren community.
