OBU Tigers Maul Indy to Advance in NCAA Division II Playoffs

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – For the first time in school history the Ouachita Tiger football team will be advancing in the NCAA Division II Playoffs; the Tigers picked up a 35-7 win over the University of Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon in front of sold out crowd at Cliff Harris Stadium.

The Tigers improve to 6-0 at home and now hold a 24-5 record inside of Cliff Harris Stadium. Ouachita has now outscored opponents 218-32 at home this season. Indianapolis (11-2) on the other hand will see their season come to a close with another loss to a Great American Conference team.

Ouachita (12-0) produced 465 yards of total offense, 303 of which came on the ground. Junior running back Shun'cee Thomas (Bossier City, La.) led the rushing attack with 98 yards and touchdown in the game. Brockton Brown (Sheridan, Ark.) produced 69 rushing yards and a score, while senior running back Kris Oliver (Arkadelphia, Ark.) finished the afternoon with 133 all-purpose yards and a touchdown.   

Brayden Brazeal (England, Ark.) had one of his best games behind center for the Tigers. The redshirt freshman finished the game going 14-for-19 with 162 passing yards and a pair of touchdown passes in the game. Outside of a 64-yard bomb to Oliver in the third quarter, Brazeal found his two favorite targets in Drew Harris (Benton, Ark.) and Allie Freeman (Little Rock, Ark.). Freeman finished the afternoon with a team high five receptions for 34 yards, Harris added four receptions for 39 yards and a score.

The Ouachita defense shutdown Great Lake Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Year Al McKeller. Mckeller was only able to accumulate 70 rushing yards in the contest, his freshman counterpart Toriano Clinton gained just 29 yards on the day. The Tiger secondary also held quarterback Jake Purichia in check, passing for 164 yards and just one score on the day.

The Greyhounds had three players end the game with double digit tackles. Alex Parsons led the defense with 15 total tackles, Cole Sigmund added 11 tackles and Joe Lambright recorded an even 10 tackles in the game. Airric Parker (San Diego, Calif.) and Keandre Evans (Junction City, Ark.) led the way for the Tigers on defense.

First Quarter: Ouachita 7, UIndy 0
After a pair of punts began the game, Ouachita started their second drive of the game on their own 35-yardline. On the third play of the drive Oliver raced ahead 24-yards to the UIndy 26-yardline. Five plays later Brown ran the ball in on a direct snap for his 16th touchdown of the season.

The touchdown proved to be the only score in the opening quarter as both defenses forced the offenses to punt the ball away.

Second Quarter: Ouachita 21, UIndy 7
The Greyhounds responded in the second quarter with 7-play, 63-yard drive. Purichia completed a 32-yard pass to Aaron Matio to tie the game at seven.
With 12:45 to go in the second quarter Ouachita took over on their own 28-yardline. On the third play of the drive Brown broke a 43-yard run down to the Greyhound 20-yardline. A few plays later and Harris found the back of the endzone on a three-yard touchdown scamper.

After a few stalled drives by each offense, Ouachita got the ball back with 2:40 left to go in the half. Brazeal methodically picked apart the Greyhound defense as the marched down the field. Brazeal found Harris in the endzone with four seconds to go in half.

Third Quarter: Ouachita 35, UIndy 7
The Ouachita defense forced another three and out to start the third quarter. It took the Ouachita offense just three plays as Brazeal hit Oliver in stride down the middle of the field for a 64-yard touchdown completion.

On the Tigers, second drive of the quarter the offense needed just two plays as Shun'Cee Thomas exploded for 63-yard touchdown run to put Ouachita up by 28 points.

Fourth Quarter: Ouachita 35, UIndy 7
Ouachita held the ball for 12 out of the final 15 minutes in the fourth quarter to secure the Tigers first ever playoff victory.

Former Lumberjck Hayden Lassiter had 2 tackle, and Lafoy Smith had 4 tackles with one for a loss of yards.

Ouachita will host Ferris State next Saturday at Cliff Harris Stadium. Information on next week's Quarterfinal matchup will be released later in the week.
