UAM Picked to Finish 6th


RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – After a fourth place finish in the inaugural season of the Great American Conference, the University of Arkansas at Monticello football team has been picked to finish sixth in the 2012 season in a preseason poll released by the conference office on Tuesday.

The Boll Weevils received 22 poll points from the league’s nine head coaches. UAM went 5-6 overall last season and 3-3 in GAC games. Joining UAM in a four-way tie for sixth in the preseason poll are Southeastern Oklahoma State, Southwestern Oklahoma State and Southern Arkansas.


Henderson State has been predicted to win the 2012 GAC football championship with 57 poll points and four first place votes. The Reddies went 6-4 in 2011 and 4-1 in GAC games for a second place finish. Following the Reddies are East Central and defending GAC champion Ouachita Baptist in a tie for second place. Each received 54 poll points. ECU received one more first place vote than OBU with three.

Harding and Arkansas Tech follow in fourth and fifth place with 42 and 29 poll points, respectively.

The 2012 season kicks off on Thursday, August 30 with four of the league’s current members and two provisional members taking the field. UAM’s first game in Saturday, September 1 at home against College of Faith. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Convoy Leslie Cotton Boll Stadium.
