Annual Orange and Black Scrimmage Report, Plus 400 Photos

Lumberjack WR Terez Hampton had a solid Orange and Black Scrimmage performance.
A good crowd turned out at Jim Hurley, Jr. Stadium Tuesday night as the Warren Lumberjack football team took to the field for the annual Orange and Black Scrimmage.

It was a relatively laid back affair, clearly meant to give the squad some good looks and reps in a game style situation without too much contact at the skilled positions in hopes of keeping injury free.

Warren has power this season to it's benefit in the trenches.
Senior Quarterback Justin Gorman had a solid evening.  His pocket presence was reassuring, but even when required to scramble he looked much more agile and confident on the run.

Running back Kilay Cox appears to near full game physical condition.  He’s running hard and with an attitude.  That’s something to be admired in a tail back.  Cox has some solid help on the depth chart with Trent Broughton and Sophomore Dennis Daniels also both running with power.

The receiving corps is still working to find it’s true rhythm and crispness here at the preseason stages.  There were several instances however on the short night of play where real quality shined through.  During the first series Senior Terez Hampton, who was dealt a tough leg injury last season in week one, burst down the field on a go route and caught a beautiful pass from Gorman.  Hampton’s speed was noticeable to say the least.  He is looking to have a great comeback season.  Jaylon Marshall’s route running was spot on most of the night, it’s just a matter of timing with his QB.  Warren’s other top notch receiver, Darveon Brown, made perhaps his best play of the night on defense.  During the second series he jumped high into the air about 20 yards downfield and picked of a pass across the middle.  Brown returned it for a touchdown.

The Lumberjacks’ offensive line had a good scrimmage overall.  The few breakdowns came because of great defensive coverage downfield.  Wesley Cornish and Adam Nolan are anchoring a good size offensive line which hopes to make a statement this season in the trenches.

Defensively it was tough to see much, not because the talent isn’t there, but because at the end of the day this was simply a scrimmage.  The overall goal was to get in some game style reps without risking injury, so the tackles and contact was kept to a minimum.  I was impressed with our defensive ends.  Peyton Hargis continues to improve and once more, our secondary showing it’s experience and intelligence.

The Lumberjacks will face off against McGehee next Tuesday in a final preseason scrimmage.
