Lumberjacks In Familiar Territory

The Warren Lumberjacks are preparing for round #2 of the Arkansas Activities Association football playoffs in their quest to capture another State Championship.  The Jacks earned a 1st round Bye and now face Pottsville at Jim Hurley, Jr. Stadium Friday night November, 20th.  As long as they keep winning, the team will enjoy home field advantage right up to the title game in War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock.

By winning the 8AAAA championship for 2016, the Lumberjacks have now won or shared the past four conference titles and 12 of the last 16.  During that time Warren has played in five State Championship games and won three.  It has been a dominating 16 years.

Past wins and titles will not guarantee success this year but the tradition does help.  Warren kids expect to win and the coaches know how to win.  The fact is, the Lumberjacks are competitive and successful year in and year out.

Many football experts picked Warren fourth in 2016 in class 8AAAA.  The team was and is very young.  It has been a season of numerous injuries to key players.  Throughout it all, the young men kept winning and finished with a 9-1 record, losing only to nonconference foe Pulaski Academy, a top rated class 5A program.  Warren's young linemen got better, Hayden Lassiter developed into a top rated quarterback, Dennis Daniels became one of the top running backs in Arkansas and the defense was outstanding.  Every kid contributed and while Warren sometimes looked inexperienced and young, the seniors lead and everyone got better.  When injuries occurred, the next player stepped up and did the job.

Warren will face a very good Pottsville team Friday night and will have to play well to win and advance.  According to Warren coaches, Pottsville runs the T formation and has a 6 foot four inch fullback who weighs 230 pounds.  They have good backs and will try to control the game clock.  Their secondary is also very good and will pose a challenge to the Lumberjack passing attack.  The Lumberjacks must face this excellent team while minus several starters still out with injuries.

Coach Hembree indicated the team spent last week working to get better fundamentally.  This week the team has been practicing according to their normal weekly schedule.  He hopes to have the team as healthy as possible and ready to perform.

There are a number of very good teams vying for the class AAAA championship and the Lumberjacks are working to keep themselves in the hunt for yet another title.  A large crowd is expected to be on hand for this matchup.  Let's support the Lumberjacks!
