Mavericks Outlast Weevils in Baseball

MONTICELLO - The ninth-ranked Minnesota State Mavericks completed a three-game sweep of the University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team with a 12-11, 10-inning win over the Weevils on Saturday in a game that had 28 combined hits.

The Weevils (3-4) ended up with a 17-11 advantage in the hit column, but also had 13 runners left on base and a team total of 5-for-23 with runners in scoring position.

UAM took an early lead with one run in the bottom of the first inning, but soon lost that lead as the Mavericks (3-0) plated one in the second and two in the third to go up 3-1.

Sparked by a leadoff homerun from senior Corey Wood to start the third, the Weevils plated six runs in the inning off six hits and a pair of MSU errors to regain the lead. UAM added a cushion to its lead in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore Brian Ray was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. That put UAM up 8-4.

The Mavericks pulled to within one run with a three-run rally in the top of the sixth, and later posted four runs in the eighth to take an 11-9 lead. Again, UAM responded with a long ball, this time a two-run homerun from redshirt freshman Marshall McPherson in the bottom of the eighth to force an 11-all tie. It was McPherson's first career hit at UAM.

That score held through the ninth inning to force UAM's first extra-inning game of the year. MSU's Taylor Branstad led off the top of the 10th inning with a homerun to right field to break the tie. The Weevils were retired in order in the bottom half of the inning to end the game.

Junior C.J. Womack led the Weevils offensively with a 4-for-6 performance at the plate. Ray and Wood each added three hits, while junior Alex Smith also reached double-digits offensively with two hits.

UAM wraps up its five-game home stand this Tuesday, February 16 against Union. First pitch is 2 p.m. at Weevils Field.
