Weevil Baseball Opens Series With a Win

MONTICELLO - The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team opened a three-game Great American Conference series against Oklahoma Baptist with a 5-1 win on Friday at Weevils Field.

Senior starting pitcher Zach McKnight (1-0) shined through the first five innings, not allowing a base runner or a hit until walking three and allowing one hit in the sixth. He got out of a bases-loaded jam in that inning with a strikeout to keep the Bison (9-3, 2-2 GAC) scoreless.

McKnight earned his first win of the season with no runs allowed on three hits with seven strikeouts and three walks in seven innings of work.

Sophomore Brian Ray provided the majority of the Weevil offense with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the third and an RBI single in the fifth. His homerun in the third was the first hit for either team in the game.

Senior Mitchell Dornblut also had two hits in the win, including a double over the center fielder's head in the sixth. He later scored on a sac fly by junior Stephen Sexton.

Oklahoma Baptist's Jinny Parra (3-1) took the loss after giving up four runs off four hits with six strikeouts and four walks in the first 4.2 innings. The Bison's lone run came in the top of the eighth off an RBI groundout from Brandon Cuddy.

The three-game series concludes on Saturday with a double-header starting at noon at Weevils Field.
