Lumberjacks Punch Their Ticket to Semi-Finals

The Warren Lumberjack Football Team faced off against a very good Prairie Grove team Friday night, November 24th in the quarterfinals of the class 4A state championship playoffs.  The game was played at Jim Hurley, Jr. Stadium in Warren.  It was a hard fought game throughout the first half with the Jacks pulling away for a solid victory in the second half.  Warren won the game 35-13.

It was a game that could easily have named several Lumberjacks as player of the game.  We could name Vincent Stepps, Luke Gorman, Donovan Ross, Davis Pennington, Marcus Miller, Will Woodard, Keemontrae McKnight, J'malachi Kinnard, several offensive linemen and a number of others as outstanding players of the game.  But when it was all said and done there was the obvious choice.  Treylon Burks makes big plays every game.  In this contest, he played a lot of quarterback out of what the media calls the "elephant formation" and simply ran the ball. And run he did!  He was dominating.  In addition, he was all over the field on defense making numerous tackles.  It was a brilliant performance.  His running was complimented by outstanding blocking by the offensive line and the backs and receivers.

Prairie Grove won the toss and choose to receive.  They returned the kick off to their own 35 and the Warren defense forced a three and out, forcing a punt.  The Lumberjacks got the ball at their own 39, moved it some but had to punt.  Burks hit a booming punt and it rolled into the end zone giving Prairie Grove the ball back at their own 20.  The Tigers moved a little and were forced to again punt, giving Warren the ball at the Jack 34.  With 3:05 remaining in the first quarter, Treylon Burks ran the ball in for a touchdown from eight yards out and Jesus Tinoco made the PAT to put Warren up 7-0.

Prairie Grove took the ensuing kick off back to their own 31.  In the second quarter, they moved the ball to Warren's 15-yard line where the Lumberjacks recovered a fumble.  The Jacks drove into Tiger territory and missed a 42-yard field goal.  Late in the second quarter, Prairie Grove drove inside the Lumberjack five and were stopped by the Lumberjack defense as time expired.  Warren led 7-0 at the half.

The Lumberjacks received the second half kick off and Keemontrae McKnight returned the kick off to the Prairie Grove 41 on a great return.  With 9:18 remaining in the third quarter, Burks scored from the one yard line and Tinoco made the extra point to put Warren ahead 14-0.  The kick off left Prairie Grove at their own 34 and at the 8:15 mark of the third quarter, Keemontrae McKnight intercepted a long pass and got the ball back for Warren.  With six minutes left in the quarter, Burks raced 72 yards for a touchdown and Tinoco was again good on the point after to give the Lumberjacks a 21-0 lead.

The Tigers got the kick off back at their 30 and drove the ball down into Warren territory.  They scored from the four and made the PAT to cut the lead to 21-7.  Prairie Grove tried an on side kick and the Jacks recovered the ball at their own 48.  The third quarter ended with the score still 21-7 in favor of the Lumberjacks.

With 11:50 left in the fourth quarter, Treylon Burks sprinted 31-yards for another touchdown and Tinoco hit the PAT to stretch the Warren lead to 28-7.  Prairie Grove got the ball back at their own 45.  While trying to throw, Marcus Miller hit the quarterback forcing a bad throw which was intercepted by Burks, who ran 57-yards for the touchdown.  Tinoco made the point after and Warren was ahead 35-7.  Prairie Grove was tackled at their own 11 on the ensuing kick off but were able to mount a drive and with 6:42 left in the game, scored on a five yard pass.  The point after was no good after a bad snap and the runner being tackled by Caleb Watson leaving the score 35-13.  Another onside kick was recovered by the Jacks and Warren drove inside Prairie Grove territory only to fumble the ball back to the Tigers.  With 2:04 left in the game, Keemontrae McKnight intercepted his second pass of the game and Warren got the ball back.  The Lumberjacks ran out the clock to secure the win.

The Lumberjacks now move to the semi-finals of class 4A and will travel to Little Rock to face the Joe T. Robinson Senators.  The game will be one of the biggest in the state on December 1st.  Kick off is set for 7:00 P.M.  The Lumberjacks need a huge crown to be in attendance and support this team as they seek the opportunity to play for another state title.  SRC will talk with Coach Hembree Wednesday, November, 29th to get his thoughts on the upcoming contest.

There was a big crowd on hand for the Prairie Grove game, including former Lumberjack great, Razorback great and current Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jarius Wright.
