Lumberjacks Fall Short In Final Non-Conference Game

Photos by Giselle Villareal
Coach Bo Hembree believes in a tough non-conference schedule to get his team ready for  the conference battles.  The 2014 season has been no exception.  Warren started with class 7A power Fort Smith Southside, then took on class 4A Stuttgart and finished Friday night against class 5A Pulaski Academy.  The Lumberjacks pushed Southside to the limit, handled Stuttgart fairly easily and struggled against a very good P. A. team picked to win their conference.  Warren enters the 8AAAA conference with a 1-2 record.

The final score against P.A. was P.A 50-Warren 21.  The final results are slightly misleading as Warren's defense played very well at times but gave up too many big plays  P. A. never punts so every series they must be stopped on 4 downs.  The Warren offensive looked impressive at times but could not be consistent.  The Jacks just missed on several long passes.

Caylx Harris picked off a P.A. pass early in the game but the Bruins scored first to take a 6-0 lead.  Warren came back on a Kilay Cox run and a good kick by Kevin Cotez to take a 1 point lead.  In the second quarter P. A. scored on a pass and made a 2 point conversion.  They scored again on a pass and made the extra point.  They completed the half with a field goal for a 24-7 halftime advantage.

Pulaski Academy scored three more times in the third quarter while Warren got a TD from Kilay Cox and a 2 point conversion on a pass to Jaylon Marshall.  P.A. got another score in the 4th period and Warren tallied on a pass from Darveon Brown to Frankin Gilmore.  Warren spent a good amount of the second half with Brown at quarterback.  Justin Gorman continued to punt very well.

If the Lumberjacks can get some consistency on offense they should be very competitive  in the 8AAAA conference.  Cox had over 100 yards rushing for the night and ran hard all night with a good push from the offensive line.  The Warren defensive line had a number of big plays throughout the game.

Photographer's Note:  I would like to thank Giselle Villareal and Jonah Barbara for taking photos during Friday's game.  If you see them, tell them, "Great Job!"
