UAM Falls to SWOS


MONTICELLO - Junior Jamal Peterson nailed a three-pointer with 13 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime, but the University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team was outscored 11-4 in the extra period for a 70-63 loss to Southwestern Oklahoma State at home on Saturday.

Peterson's game tying three-pointer capped an 11-0 run for the Weevils (5-8, 2-7 Great American Conference) over the previous four minutes. It was Peterson who started the run with a trey at the 3:47 mark.

In the overtime period, senior Sharif Hudson cut UAM's deficit to two-points with a made jumper at the 2:30 mark, but the Bulldogs (10-6, 4-5 GAC) kept the Weevils off the board for the rest of the game.

The Weevils led for the first eight minutes of the game before the Bulldogs used a 10-2 run to take a four-point lead at the 9:18 mark of the opening period. SWOSU kept its lead throughout the rest of the first half, the entire second half and one minute into the overtime period.

The Bulldogs led by as much as 11 points on several different occasions in the second half.

UAM finished the game shooting 34 percent from the field (22-for-65). The Weevils made 6-of-27 three-pointers and 13-of-22 foul shots. Junior Richard Benedyth led UAM with 16 points. Peterson followed at 15, and Hudson also reached double-digits with 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

SWOSU finished at 35 percent from the field (24-for-69). The Bulldogs made 9-of-27 three-pointers and 13-of-22 foul shots. SWOSU's Martell Collins led all scorers and rebounders with a double-double of 18 points and 16 boards.

The Weevils are back in action this Thursday at home against Southern Arkansas. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Steelman Field House.
