WEEVILS BASEBALL SURVIVES IN 10 INNINGS

ST. CLOUD, Minnesota — The 24th-ranked University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team avoided elimination at the NCAA Central Region Tournament on Saturday with a 2-1, 10-inning victory over Great American Conference foe Southwestern Oklahoma State at Joe Faber Field.

The fourth-seeded Weevils (38-15) advance to face No. 6 seed Emporia State or No. 1 seed St. Cloud State on Sunday at noon in another elimination game. UAM would play again on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. with a win.

In Saturday’s win over SWOSU (34-17), the Bulldogs struck first with their lone run in the top of the second inning, taking advantage of back-to-back walks and an RBI single from Tanner Dearman. SWOSU had runners in scoring position in five other innings, but each time the Weevils pitched out of the jam.

UAM tied the game in the sixth on an RBI fielder’s choice by senior Mitchell Dornblut to score senior right fielder Corey Wood, who singled earlier in the inning.

SWOSU rallied with two outs to get runners on first and second base in the top of the 10th, but a groundout ended the threat.

In UAM’s half of the 10th inning, senior shortstop Evan Comeau started the rally by getting hit by a pitch and moved to second on a single from senior left fielder Kevin Fitzpatrick. Wood followed up with a walk to load the bases for Steinke, who sent a 1-1 pitch to centerfield, deep enough for Comeau to score easily from third on the tag up.

Senior Chad Bradford (2-1) earned the win in relief, keeping the Bulldogs scoreless on just two hits in the final 5.2 innings.

UAM outhit SWOSU 7-6. Fitzpatrick and junior second baseman Nick Piraino each had two hits.

Sunday’s action will be carried live on the UAM Sports Network at KHBM-FM 93.7 in Monticello and online at UAMsports.com. Cablevision will carry the game on local cable channel 17 in Monticello and Warren. Live audio and video streaming, as well as live stats, can be found at www.UAMsports.com/coverage.aspx.
