Blossoms Split with Southwest Oklahoma State


WEATHERFORD, Okla. — The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team split a Great American Conference double-header with Southwestern Oklahoma State on the road Saturday, winning the first game 6-4 before losing the second game 3-0.

In the first game, the Blossoms (26-22, 13-11 GAC) broke through for four runs in the top of the third on a pair of homeruns, a three-run shot from sophomore Sara Matthews and a solo blast from freshman Kali Piha.

UAM went to the long ball again for its final two runs, this time a two-run homerun from junior Brittany Eitel in the top of the sixth.


SWOSU (15-33, 9-23 GAC) scratched one run across in each of the final four innings, highlighted by a solo homerun from Kendal Smith in the bottom of the sixth.

Senior Randa Perry (11-11) earned the complete-game victory, allowing four runs (three earned) off seven hits with six strikeouts and three walks in seven innings of work. Megan Ayala (0-9) suffered the loss for SWOSU with six runs allowed off eight hits with one strikeout and two walks in a complete-game effort.

In the second half of the double-header, the Bulldogs broke a scoreless tie with two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth following an UAM fielding error to lead off the inning. SWOSU finalized the scoring with an RBI double from Kori Oord in the bottom of the fifth.

UAM left eight runners on base in the loss, including leaving runners in scoring position in the second, third and sixth innings. The Blossoms managed six hits, led by junior Hannah Pendley’s 2-for-3 performance.

Sophomore Katie Slaughter (13-9) took the loss after allowing three runs (one earned) off five hits with four strikeouts and two walks in the first 4.1 innings. Julianna Martinez (13-14) earned the complete-game shutout  after allowing six hits with eight strikeouts and three walks in seven innings of work.

The Blossoms close the regular season on Sunday with another double-header against SWOSU. First pitch is set for noon in Weatherford.
